in the Time of Quarantine It may not be too much to say that the fate of the world will depend on human connection, on cross-cultural concord, harmony, union. Pas De Deux, in the Time of Quarantine offers a model. The project forges remarkable connections, does so under challenging circumstances, and, almost as a bonus, spins off graceful, substantial, meaningful art. The ballet term “Pas De Deux” describes a dance of two people. This is difficult to achieve with physical separation and particularly so during a worldwide pandemic. In Pas De Deux, in the Time of Quarantine, quarantined dancers film themselves dancing—in Santiago, Chile; Los Angeles, California; Berlin, Germany; Sofia, Bulgaria; Buseyi, Iganga, Uganda; Albuquerque, New Mexico; and many other locations around the world. The instigating artist, Sapira Cheuk, pairs the videos and transforms paired stills into paintings. In the artist’s images, doubled dancers transcend space, time, and virus. They occupy a single space, dancing and connecting together—a “Pas De Deux.” The project documents art produced in the time of pandemic, but at more profound level it points to the irrepressible power of art and human connection. The trope of the Black body as a site of death is omnipresent, he states. Being gunned down by police officers, drowning and washing up on the shores of the Mediterranean, starving and suffering in award-winning photography. With Infinite Essence, Owunna transforms the bodies of his Black models into transcendent, ethereal vessels. He hand-paints their bodies with fluorescent colors. He uses a strobe that only transmits ultraviolet light—built using his engineering background and employing a non-visible wavelength. Owunna clicks his shutter in total darkness and, for a fraction of a second, his models’ bodies illuminate as the universe. “Ultraviolet light is not visible to the human eye, and so we can illuminate and find the unseeable therein, the soul, the Igbo spiritual concept of the chi. Jill Miller examines her mother’s unexpected death during the pandemic through the lens of “everyday” quarantine life. &nbsp;Even mourning and absence are digitally mediated. Temporalities shift between virtual and real, past and present, dreamy and distressing. The landscape is unstable and fantastical: error messages interrupt video transmissions, her mother’s titanium hip hovers in the background, and the coronavirus makes an appearance during a conference call. The frenetic collage entangles and layers video conferencing fragments, 3D models, a chat with a psychic medium, and computer-generated imagery to explore the splintering of time and space during prolonged isolation. She collages the online landscape of our new digital normal, exploring an ontological shift marked by fractured connectedness, anxieties about loss and grief, a dithering between life on- and off-line, and virtually conversing with strangers and friends. He captured a lone street cleaner on a silent boulevard, a vacant café counter draped in black-and-yellow closure tape, a solitary sidewalk vendor hoping to sell shimmering face shields. “But I started to be afraid of leaving my house. I was afraid of going crazy and of disappearing into depression. The days were all the same and fear and frustration about the future increased.” To find a way forward and to express his feelings, the artist created this more elusive image, saturated in the symbolism of death and life, separation and connection. It is from the moment of Covid-19, yet somehow beyond it.
